Virtual mission of the Netherlands to Gulf region

Food

Food security is high on the agenda in the Gulf countries. Investments in the horticultural sector run like a red thread through the efforts of the various countries. In this area, Oman is mainly focusing on modernizing the sector, while UAE is particularly looking to expand their production capacity. In addition, each of these two markets have specific trends and developments that may be of interest to you, for example in the field of aquaculture, veal and poultry, post harvest losses and the popularity of organic products.

Challenges and Opportunities

United Arab Emirates (UAE)

  • The UAE is by far the largest economy of the two countries in the mission. The UAE wants to stimulate its own production and therefore stimulates investment in the horticultural sector, which many investors want to get into using foreign technology. In addition to the most famous emirate of Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Al Ain also offer many opportunities for further development of the horticultural sector.
  • The enormous tourism sector makes Dubai an interesting market for fruit, vegetables and other consumer products and semi-finished products (ingredients) from the food sector.
  • Post harvest losses, but also food waste are points of attention in the UAE.
  • The poultry industry has developed well in recent years. Still, significant opportunities remain for equipment, day-old chicks and hatching egg suppliers.
  • Aquaculture is under development in the UAE, making the market for technology in this sector open to anyone who wants to get involved.
  • The market for (veal) meat, as well as vegetable meat substitutes, is still developing strongly in the UAE.

    Oman

    • Oman has traditionally been a country where fruit and vegetables were produced. However, modernization of this sector is necessary. The Dutch embassy in Muscat has commissioned a study to further investigate the needs in this sector. The first results of this study will be presented during the mission.
